Chapter Fourteen

MARTIN

I stared down into the cauldron, thinking about my research. I was nervous about announcing my decision. I’d been struggling with my choice for the past few days, but it was the right course of action. I would be able to further my research so the spell could be a success. And I didn’t make anything else explode. I said, “I want to be a full-fledged witch.”

Tali looked up and smiled at me. “I thought you might.”

“What do I need to do?” I asked.

She got up from her desk and joined me at the cauldron. “That depends. Do you know what kind of magic you want to perform? Which element you want to call your own?”

I thought on the question. There were several to choose from. Not only earth, water, and air. There was metal, stone, wood, and several others. But I knew which one I wanted. “Fire.”

“That makes sense. It does suit your temper,” she teased.

“Oh, shut up,” I grumbled.

Tali laughed. “I knew when the light bulbs exploded.”

My eyes widened. “What are you talking about?”

“Fire, next to water, is the most powerful element there is. Fire can manifest in destructive ways, and the light bulbs were just the start. Your power has been growing since you came here. I like to think it’s my influence. But I also know your subconscious is aware of the danger we’re in. So your powers have received a jump-start.”

I groaned. “Great, I can’t fucking wait to pull a Carrie on Caleb. Because that’s so fucking useful.”

“Fire isn’t only destruction,” Tali explained, gesturing to the flames beneath the cauldron. “The flames give light and warmth. In Greek legend, Prometheus gifted fire to man, which gave us mortals a fighting chance on this rock. Fire is about life. I suspect your affinity for the element is what allowed you to create the blood substitute. Fire was always destined to be yours.”

“Because I’m hot?” I asked with a grin.

“Because you’re lively. Come on, I can do the binding ceremony for you.”

“Is it complicated?”

She shook her head. “Nah.” Tali went to her desk and grabbed a chalice, a dagger, and a red silk cloth. She handed me the cloth and said, “Here, wrap this around your hand.” I did as she said and was surprised when she took my hand and cut my index finger. Tali caught the blood dripping from my finger in the chalice. “Okay, I’m going to say a spell to bind you to the flames. They’ll come when you call.”

“Like pyrokinesis?” I asked and she nodded.

“Yep, just like that and more.”

I grinned. “I’m going to be a firebender.”

Tali giggled. “Chill, Zuko. Now concentrate on the flames under the cauldron. Feel them in your mind, in your blood. Feel them merging with you. Close your eyes.”

I did as she instructed. The flames were rushing through my veins and I felt…whole. Powerful. Like a missing piece restored to me that I hadn’t known I lost. I shivered. Tali was chanting something—I couldn’t hear what, and I didn’t need to.
